My neighbour has a commercial 60 in 1 table top.

I was telling him (and therefore wondering if it was true) that he could probably upgrade it a larger xyz in 1 machine by replacing the board inside it.

Is it true? Easy enough to do?

He should be able to upgrade it to one of the 1940 in one jobbies as they have the JAMMA connector so in theory it should just be a matter of plugging the JAMMA harness into that although there may be some wiring that needs to be altered. A good check to see what's currently in there would be the best approach.

The downside with those larger configs is that they are all built using old parts such as P4 chips and DDR1 RAM and everything is hot glued to the mainboard making servicing/repairing a bit of a pain. I've been able to repair 2 of those sorts of machines with replacement CPUs/RAM but spares are getting harder to come by.

Upgrading to a MAME solution would be more work but more serviceable/expandable down the track.

Thanks BGH....

I dont think he wants something with so many games, but I thought you could get like a 400 in 1 or something and thought it would just be a case of swapping the boards over.

The otherside is that the table top only has 3 buttons, so perhaps there are not that many vertical games anyway with that layout... even out of the 60, there is only about 30-40 unique ones, with quite a few repeats or variations.

Yeh there are heaps of variants out there, 190 in 1, 400 in one and so on, there are some that re more geared towards horizontal games but there's bound to be some vertical heavy setups. They should have made the screens on those machines square!

For a vertical screen you are very limited with choices.

Either 60 in 1, 276 In 1 or mame.
