"How about, Global Thermonuclear War?"
"Wouldn't you prefer a nice game of chess?"

I watched that last week, he plays Galaga in it!

We were going to call our son Ryland after Ry Cooder (brilliant blues guitarist for those of you not in the know) until our friends named their kid Riley. :(

My Mrs thought it would sound like we were copying. So we called him Conor.

Sody pop, Joshua was the name of the computer in War Games if I remember correctly?

Right you are Begee.

Joshua was the affectionate name given to the super computer, WOPR (War Operation Plan Response), by it's creator Professor Stephen Falken.

Joshua was also the backdoor password that David Lightman (Matthew Broderick's character), used to gain access.

Director John Badham invented the name "WOPR" when he thought the NORAD SIOP (Single Integrated Operational Plan) was "boring, and told you nothing". 'WOPR' according to the director plays off of the Whopper hamburger and a fuzzy image of something going whop.

Nerdy enough for ya? :ugeek:

Just to add to the nerd fest...

2001: A Space Odyssey is a brilliant movie and has probably the best know computer of all time as the star of the movie.
What's his name?

Yeah, you all know its HAL - 9000 to be precise.

So what? Well...counting forwards in the alphabet, add 1 number to each letter and what do you have?

Spooky!

Hmmm, wonder if HAL was an IBM? Although with him going a bit funny I can't imagine them wanting their sticker on it!

It would be like James Cameron asking Intel if he could put 'Intel Inside' stickers on the Terminators!

I think thats pretty much the reason it worked out the way it did. I think they wanted their backing, but IBM renegged. So they decided to give them a parting backhander with HAL instead.

Although, these things tend to be littered with conspiracy theories and the REAL story may be something completely different....but thats what i've heard anyway.
